In an unprecedented incident of sorts, the Board of Secondary Education cancelled the High School Certificate (HSC) Examination in regular stream across the State on Wednesday hours after miscreants broke into a school in Puri’s Kakatpur and made away with question papers.

The Centre Superintendent and three other employees of the Bhagawati Vidyapeeth, including the deputy Centre Superintendent, at Bajpur under Kakatpur block in Puri district were today put under suspension in a follow up action by the authorities in the Matriculation Regular question papers theft case. The sensational incident took place on Tuesday night.
The BSE authorities said that examinations for ex-regular and madhyama candidates would be conducted as per the original schedule while a decision about the regular examination would be taken at the earliest.

The incident, which has come as a shock for both the students and the Board, took place at Bhagabati Vidyapeetha where unidentified miscreants made their way into the headmaster’s chamber and decamped with the question papers.

On Wednesday, the students had appeared for English paper, but the examination stood cancelled too. The HSC examination began on Monday and students had appeared for Odia on the first day. Examination for subjects such as Hindi/Sanskrit, mathematics, science, history and geography were scheduled to be held subsequently.

“We will re-frame question papers afresh and announce fresh schedule of the regular examination in a couple of days,” Board president Satyakam Mishra said. However, examination for the ex-regular stream will continue as usual.

Fresh examination could start only after 20-25 days which will push the entire process way behind schedule. Given that tests will start mid-April, students will be subjected to a gruelling summer.

That’s not all. Publication of results, which takes at least 60 days after the exams are over, will be delayed further. This will create problems for those students who would be appearing for various all-India entrance tests.

Besides, the theft will impose huge financial burden on the Board as it has to carry out the whole exercise __ framing of new question papers for all subjects, barring Odia, transportation to individual centres and holding the tests __ all over again.

As per the existing examination process, question paper sets (for all subjects) directly reach the centres ahead of the test. A theft poses risk of leakage of the question papers across the State. Meanwhile, the Board has registered an FIR with the local police station. The centre superintendent has been placed under suspension with immediate effect. He will also face criminal proceedings.

As many as 5,11,443 students, including 4.67 lakh in regular and 38,613 in ex-regular streams, are appearing for the examination across 2,384 centres in the State. On the first day, the Board had booked 582 candidates for malpractice.

A poem can spark off some wonderful creative writing. Students can add more lines or stanzas individually or in pairs or groups.

They can write a letter to a character in the poem, write about what happened before the beginning or after the ending of the poem and so on.

Students could use the poem as a starting point and model for some parallel writing: Each group might contribute a verse to a collective poem (or rap).

Genre transfer presents a lot of opportunities for writing practice; letters, diary entries, radio plays, newspaper articles, agony aunt columns all based on the original text from a poem.

My students have found reformulation exercises very stimulating, where they switch between formal and informal language.

Longer poems can be summarised in fifty words.

It is also fun to get students to transform content words to synonyms or antonyms and then discuss the subtleties of vocabulary.

Some pros and cons
You might need to spend a bit of time finding a poem that links thematically with your scheme of work, and making sure you respect the copyright rules.

I have rejected poems that are too long, too archaic or too obscure, or that I can’t muster any enthusiasm for or that the students may not respond to. The wrong poem is worse than no poem at all.

I find that I need to explain my pedagogical rationale and the aims of activities very clearly, and students who have disliked studying literature in their own language may need extra motivation.

I sometimes reassure my students that their other needs, e.g. exam preparation, are being met.

It’s worth taking the risk and using poems though, because poems can foster a love of English, and they are so versatile.

I have used them as warmers or fillers, and as the catalyst for many different activities with students ranging from Pre-intermediate to Proficiency, and with multilevel classes.

Students find a poem a welcome, and sometimes inspirational, change from a coursebook. Poems can be involving, motivating and memorable, and they can supplement and enrich just about any lesson.

1. SET AN AIM IN LIFE

If you sit in the boat of life without knowing your destination you will become the slave of circumstances and other people. Your progress or development will totally depend on your luck. The wind of circumstances will push the boat to any direction – you won’t have any control on anything. And you will rarely be able to make things happen. You may even be crushed by the competition forced upon you by other people.
To change this scenario you need to set an aim for your life. It is true that a person has several aims in life but to decide about chief aim is essential to make good progress. When you have an aim it is like a destination – you can chart your route, plan your action and formulate strategies to reach their at a speed. The personality of such a person automatically get a sort of charisma – developed by his driving force.

2. POWER OF KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge is power. Nobody is impressed with a person who doesn’t even know what is happening around or in the world. He is considered a fool whom no wise man or woman would like to befriend or follow. Therefore it is necessary to enrich your general knowledge. And you should be the master of the field in which you are working. To update your general knowledge: a) read newspaper, b) watch informative programs on TV, c) read good & popular books, d) interact (interrelate, communicate) with intelligent persons.

3. LOOK CONFIDENT

A look of confidence on your face impresses everybody. If you walk with a feeling of failure and frustration on your face people will shun away from you. Even if you are facing difficulties and worries in your life you must know how to think and look positive. Shake hands with others firmly. While shaking hands or talking make an eye contact with others. Speak less and with conviction. Such simple actions will maintain your confidence. Your self-confidence can not only conquer the mountains of difficulties but also the interview boards.

4. SPEAK IN STYLE

Most of the successful persons maintain a unique style in speaking. They speak clearly and forcefully. Be careful that you have a good command on the language you speak. Don’t make grammatical mistakes else you may become a laughing stock. If necessary take training from a good teacher. Give extra care to your pronunciation. Speaking power is an essential trait of any good personality.

5. DRESS UP SMARTLY

A smartly dressed-up person is admired everywhere. By observing successful people in any field, marketing, business, movies, media etc., you will come to the conclusion that most of the successful persons in almost every field have a keen taste for good dresses. Good dresses also prove a stimulus for the wearer. He feels more confident and relaxed. There is a joyful glow on his face. His handshake is more confident. A bad dress always invokes inferiority complex. No good company hires a shabbily dressed person today.

6. A HEALTHY BODY

A body burdened with this or that disease may win pity of others but it is very difficulty for that person to maintain attraction in his personality for a long time. A healthy and smart look is absolutely essential to attract others. And if you work on it you can easily attain it. Take exercise regularly, play games or go for a morning walk – whatever suits your body and psychology. Eat balanced diet. It will strengthen the immune system of your body – keeping you healthy and fit for action.

7. GOOD HABITS

A man is generally a creature of his habits. With bad habits you may become a sheer nuisance for others. Then how will you impress them? Cleanliness, punctuality, completing your works on time, fulfilling your promises, having sincerity and dedication to work, listening others properly, keeping yourself away from smoking and drinking – are the habits which add sparkle and dynamism to your personality. They endear you to the people.

You should also be friendly and polite while dealing with others. You won’t be able to impress the people with an attitude of arrogance. If people feel uncomfortable in your presence it is a sign that you need to improve your behaviour. Others must feel easy while approaching or talking to you.

Becoming a certified and licensed massage therapist will open the door to many interesting career opportunities. Massage therapists are employed not just at spas and salons, but at fitness centers, chiropractic offices, cruise ships and hotels, and in alternative health care practices. Some are even employed in corporate wellness centers. Massage therapist careers rarely conform to the typical 40 hour work week and provide lots of schedule flexibility.

If you begin your massage therapy training assuming that you will work in one field, you may find a specialty area that suits your style more favorably. Even if you are planning to start your own massage therapy business, it is helpful to know what areas you could possibly specialize in down the road and plan you massage therapy training accordingly.

Massage Therapist Careers

Here are some of the possibilities in massage therapist careers:

Spas: Typically a massage therapist will need to know basic Swedish massage, as well as deep tissue massage. Learning specialty massage treatments such as hot stone therapy can be advantageous. If you are interested in doing spa treatments such as body wraps and scrubs, weekend continuing education classes are available in most geographic locations.

Sports massage: Work on staff for a sports team, at a gym or fitness center or in private practice. Requires special sports massage training. Training in active isolated stretching is also useful.

Deep Tissue Massage Specialist: Deep tissue massage is used in spas, chiropractic offices and anywhere where clients are in need of chronic pain treatment. A must have for private practice!

Infant Massage: Learn and teach infant massage to new parents at hospitals and birthing centers or for new mom support groups. Infant massage also requires specialty training that is not offered in most therapeutic massage training programs.

Corporate Chair Massage / On-Site Massage: This type of massage has gained popularity over the past years as large corporations have implemented wellness programs to benefit their employees. Typically paid for by the company, the massage therapist performs a 10-15 minute mini-massages to corporate clients in a specially designed massage chair.

Hospitality: Work on a cruise ship, hotel or vacation resort. This is a perfect job for a massage therapist who loves to travel.

Geriatric Massage: Massage is incredibly helpful for managing chronic pain and easing depression in geriatric patients. This is one of the least-served areas and wide open for new, compassionate massage therapists.

Chiropractic Massage: Work on site for a chiropractor doing trigger point, neuromuscular therapy, isolated stretching or deep tissue massage. This is a wonderful way for a new massage therapist to get experience working with specific muscle groups with guidance from a doctor. In some states, this type of massage is covered by insurance. You can be paid by the specific client or by the chiropractor.

In the very olden days, a career was a job you were born into. You became a farmer, a fisher, a blacksmith, or whatever your parents had been, and your children would be the same (unless they wandered off to war or to start a new religion). In the more recent olden days, a career was forty years working in the same factory from high school graduation to retirement. But what is a career today? No one expects to do what their parents do, and no one expects to hold down the same job for more than 5 years (unless you’re in the government!).

So what is a career today? And do you even want one?

Some People define their career as working in the same role / industry / field for their entire life. For instance, a person might get a degree in electrical engineering and then spend the next forty years working in electrical engineering types of jobs for various companies, and all the while introducing himself at cocktail parties as “an electrical engineer.” That seems pretty straightforward.

In fact, we may be entering a period of economic history in which that sort of career is increasingly rare, if not impossible (outside of government work, of course). We may be entering an era of continuous change, of continuous re-education and self-re-invention. The concept of a career itself may be becoming obsolete.

So what should you be doing right now? If you’re a software programmer, maybe you should be writing your own applications in your spare time. If you’re an artist, maybe you should be creating works to sell online, or offering freelance services. If you’re a business analyst or manager, maybe you should be partnering up with old friends to start side businesses, or investments. The point is that it is no longer enough to just spend 8 hours a day in one job. That’s not a career. That’s just a job.

Your career is the sum of all your professional endeavors, and if your only professional endeavor is to spend 8 hours a day at a desk shuffling papers for someone who is ready to retire, then your career is already in trouble.

The good news, however, is that you can start bulding your personal empire right now, through the magic of the internet. If you make anything that can be sold, start making some more: artwork, articles, designs, applications, jewelry, clothing, investments. If you can freelance, do it, in your spare time. And if your day-job doesn’t translate into anything you can do in your spare time, then take a look at your hobbies. What do you like to do? Cook? Garden? Teach? I’ll bet you could find a way to turn your passion into something worth putting on a resume if you tried.

The bottom line here is that life is very long, and it can be very expensive, and you cannot rely on any company, or even any industry, to continue to support you over the next several decades. Your best bet is to invest more time and effort in yourself, and while education seems like a smart investment, your own lines of business could prove far more profitable, and far more reliable, in the long term.
